Skylarks are very hard to spot without hearing them — but the clue is in the name. Once you hear one, just look high up into the sky and try to find a dark speck flapping its wings far above. The Skylark is an endangered species, and there are only a few places near us where you can see or photograph them, so hearing and seeing them on our second outing this Sunday was a stroke of luck. The technical challenge with Skylarks is that you always want to photograph them mid-flight while they are singing — but the quality usually suffers due to the bird being high up against a bright sky. Hence for the main photo I went with a shot that had a better background, but you can also see the “singing in the sky” version below.
