Last day in the Brecon Beacons, Wales, we spent in Abergavenny, walking around the castle, the grounds, and along the bank of the River Usk. And there we hit the jackpot: the river was a bit low, so we went down the bank along a long straight stretch and I thought, This looks like a good place for a Kingfisher to hunt. About three minutes of intent scanning for a typical Kingfisher perch revealed a large-ish orange-blue plump that I recognised instantly. We crept as close as possible and started filling our SD cards at an alarming rate. The bird was very active and very hungry indeed – flying on and off various perches and staring intently into the water. I ended up with more than 120 photos, which I reluctantly trimmed to about 10. I even captured a full sequence of the bird diving in and out of the water, which I have uploaded below.
