Today’s outing was to Virginia Water, and by sheer luck I managed to capture a photo of this magnificent Black Swan. A few clearly local people were also taking photos, and I asked whether these birds are a common sight. The reply was, “I’ve never seen a bird like this.”
In the evening, I checked my most trusted source, the Collins Bird Guide (3rd Edition) – Black Swan is listed on page 446 as an introduced breeding species. It notes no recorded sightings in Great Britain or Ireland.
