Because of a fantastic outing yesterday, we decided to stay an extra half-day in the Camargue – and oh boy, it was the right decision. We visited the south-eastern part of the reserve and met another set of wonderful and rare birds. Again – not the rarest in Camargue, but certainly the funniest – is the Bee-eater. We accidentally stumbled upon a group of these birds in the middle of our journey and spent 10–15 minutes observing them while wondering: why on earth are they sitting with their beaks open? We had a few theories – it is too hot for them, these ones are not feeling well, etc. – but the answer was really simple: they were lazy, and there were so many insects about that they just waited for one to fly right into their beaks. And they were absolutely right.
