A very rare bird I was writing about a few days ago – which got superseded by the Flamingos – was the European Roller. This is another bird we had never had a chance to see or photograph until the Camargue. Our first encounter was while driving, when we caught a glimpse of something incredibly blue flying off, but we could not identify it immediately. Later on, we stopped on the road at the closest point to the beach to make some Flamingo photos, then turned inshore to check for any other birds – and there it was. At that point we realised the very blue bird might have been the Roller, so we waited until it flew off to make an in-flight photo also:
