Not one of the best photos I’ve ever made, but I still wanted to share it, as I spent about 30 minutes trying to identify this duck. It is either a Teal (Eurasian, pretty common around) or a Green-Winged Teal (a North American bird, quite rare). Merlin says it is most likely a Green-Winged Teal, but because of the rarity I thought it best to double check. After a bit of a read-up, the tell-tale sign of an Eurasian Teal is a white horizontal stripe above the flanks, which is not there. A Green-Winged Teal has a white vertical bar across the side of the breast, which is also not there. A secondary identification mark — how complete the yellow line on the head is — also isn’t entirely conclusive. However, based on commonality, I’ve marked this one as a Teal. Next time I see a bird like this, I’ll make more photos…
