We are staying in a birdwatcher’s dream home in Normandy. There is a pair of Wrens living inside the thatched roof, and the ancient apple tree in the garden (with no apples any more) attracts dozens of birds every morning. There are also brambles and a few dogwood shrubs – the latter being very popular with small birds. I was having my morning coffee – with my binoculars and my camera on either side – when I noticed a Blackbird eating dogwood berries. I did not manage a shot at first, but a few minutes later the bird came back, and I was ready and focused on the right spot.
