We saw Kingfisher twice yesterday, and at the very beginning of our walk in La tourbière d’Heurteauville (literally, the peat bog of Heurteauville), we saw a Kingfisher again – this time at very close range. A nature reserve seemed a very appropriate place to stake out for a good photo, so we decided to stay put and see what we could get. We were next to a long body of water and, having seen the bird zip-zapping along it lengthwise, we chose a vantage point covering the length. After about 20 minutes of waiting, it flew in and perched on a dead tree we had seen it use previously. Unfortunately, it was a bit far from where we were waiting, so the initial photos were not great. It was torture: either stay where you are and get photos from afar, or move closer and risk the bird flying off. We settled on a routine – make a few snaps, then get ten steps closer – which produced the best photo above. A half-decent one from the initial position here, and a slightly better pose but lower-quality photo here.
